LAR Process Analysers AG celebrates 25-year business anniversary

Berlin, September 2011 – LAR Process Analysers AG, located in Berlin, Germany, celebrated its 25th anniversary on 8th September. To this occasion partners and customers from industries and research were invited to participate in an expert's meeting. Under the motto „25 years of innovative online measurements“ successful solutions in industrial and municipal applications were discussed, as well as future trends presented.

The event was opened with congratulations from Mr. Heinz Buschkowsky, the district mayor of Berlin Neukölln, where the company has been located since 2007. An exchange of experiences relating to the topic „Resource efficient industrial water and waste water technology by optimum online analysis“ took place, under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Dr. Rudolph, University Witten.

Guest speakers from the Technical University Berlin, network partners of German Water Partnership (GWP) as well as operators and customers from various industries examined in their presentations examples of applications such as the treatment of industrial wastewater, the optimal water recycling in industry or the monitoring of surface water on airports. Furthermore, cooperations and projects which will point the way ahead as well as the latest results of LAR's R&D departement were introduced:

  • BioMonitor, Online Respirometer for optimal control of WWTP
  • NitriTox and ToxAlarm for online determination of toxic substance in wastewater and surface water monitoring as well as the
  • QuickTOCultra, the ultimate solution for the most difficult industrial wasterwater applications.

These innovations base on years of experience and intensive dialogue with customers and users, representing the combined innovative powers of LAR. Since its formation in 1986 the company has become a leading developer and manufacturer of online analysers for sum parameters in water analysis, with well-known customers in the most different of industries and the most difficult fields of applications.

This success has been possible, because the combination of experienced colleagues with distinguished students and trainees allows a fresh and dynamic working atmosphere, which provides the continued growth of the company on the market. After the expert's meeting all guests, partners, friends and of course the whole staff of LAR were invited to the company party on the company's premises. The anniversary was celebrated together with a rich buffet, music and refreshing cocktails.

The total organic carbon (TOC) is one of the most important sum parameters in the assessment of the organic pollution of water. Since it includes all carbon compounds as one mass, it is exactly defined and an absolute quantity. Therefore, it may be determined directly.

The chemical oxygen demand (COD) indicates the amount of oxygen which is needed for the oxidation of all organic substances in water and is thus an important indicator for water analysis. It is considered in the planning and controlling of treatment, as well as assessing its efficiency, thus forming the basis for the calculation of waste water charges.

The COD can be determined in laboratory or online, whereby these methods significantly differ in duration and consumables used.

The biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) indicates the amount of oxygen which is needed for the biological degradation of organic substances in water.

Since the generally used BOD5 excludes the nitrification part of the process, this parameter is poorly suited for the control of waste water treatment plants. Alternatively, the total BOD is well-suited, due to the determination of the nitrogen as well as the carbonaceous part of biological degradation.

Toxicity is described as the direct harmful effect of a substance on organisms. These effects can already occur at low concentraions of toxic substances and are dependent on the incubation period and the dosage.

Some test methods that are available on the market can detect toxicity by using fish, daphnia, molluscs, algae or luminous bacteria and testing whether a water sample has a toxic effect on the organisms. They do not, however, identify exactly which toxins are present.

The total nitrogen bound (TNb) shows the pollution of water caused by nitrogen compounds. Nitrogen may be present as ammonia, ammonium salts, nitrites, nitrates and organic nitrogen compounds.

In contrast to single measurements of the above-mentioned components, the TNb determination contains all these substances in a single analysis process.

The total phosphorus (TP) is a sum parameter that shows the organic and inorganic phosphorus compounds in water. Phosphorus is an essential nutrient for humans as well as flora and fauna. However, the substance – depending on its concentration– may cause serious damage.
